Aston Villa have confirmed the signing of winger Moussa Diaby from Bayer Leverkusen.

The 24-year-old moves to Villa Park from an undisclosed fee and has already joined up with his new team-mates on the club's tour of USA.

Diaby, who scored 14 goals and registered 11 assists across all competitions last season, had previously been of interest to Arsenal and Newcastle.

Sky Sports News understands Leverkusen had been quoting as much as £88m for Diaby as recently as last summer.

The France international becomes Aston Villa's third summer signing.

Diaby has 10 senior France caps but was not part of the squad that reached the World Cup final in Qatar last year.

Having come up through the ranks at hometown club Paris St Germain, Diaby moved to Leverkusen in 2019. He scored 49 goals in 172 appearances for the Bundesliga side before completing his switch to Villa Park.

Villa completed the deal despite reported interest in Diaby from Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr, and he will now form a vital part of a squad that will enter the Europa Conference League having finished seventh in the Premier League last year.

Villa have already signed defender Pau Torres from Villarreal and free agent midfielder Youri Tielemans after his exit from Leicester this summer.

Monchi previously worked with head coach Unai Emery at Sevilla.

Villa have not disclosed the fee or length of contract for the 24-year-old but it has been reported that the deal is worth 60m euros (£51.9m).

Villa's previous club record was £33m for Argentina midfielder Emiliano Buendia from Norwich in June 2021.

"I will always look back happily and gratefully on my time in Leverkusen," said Diaby. "Now I want to take the next step, start a new chapter."

Diaby joined Leverkusen from Paris St-Germain in 2019 and went on to register 49 goals and 48 assists from 173 games for the German Bundesliga club.

He has 10 caps for France after making his international debut in 2021 and is Villa's third summer signing after Belgium midfielder Youri Tielemans from relegated Leicester City and Spain centre-back Pau Torres from Villarreal.

Unai Emery left Villarreal to become Villa boss last October and steered the team to a seventh-placed finish in the Premier League, securing qualification for next season's Europa Conference League.

Diaby has already linked up with his new team-mates on Villa's pre-season tour of the United States.

"We were following him. He is trying to help us improve our number in the attacking third. We are really excited and happy with him," Emery said.

"He has experience in Europe. He is young. He can play in different positions."

As a product of the PSG academy, Diaby progressed through the youth ranks while Emery was first-team coach from 2016-18.

Diaby made his first-team debut in September 2018, shortly after Emery's departure, before joining Leverkusen on a five-year deal the following summer.

"Moussa Diaby developed into a fantastic player during his time at Bayer 04," said the club's sporting director Simon Rolfes.

"The level of professionalism and determination with which he went about his job every day was truly exceptional.

"With his special style of play and enormous speed, Moussa has left his mark on our team in recent years. He is a person who has his heart in the right place."

He was Emery’s No.1 choice attacking signing this summer, with the Spaniard keen to finally solve what had become a problem position on the right side of Villa’s attack.

Brennan Johnson, the Nottingham Forest forward, was also of interest, but Diaby was Villa’s top choice and elected to snub a big-money move to Saudi Arabia to move to the West Midlands.

Villa are determined to strengthen further as they prepare to play in Europe for the first time since 2010, with Rennes winger Jeremy Doku among their targets.


They are also keen to add another centre-forward to rival first-choice Ollie Watkins, and are looking for a new right-back to challenge Matty Cash, following Ashley Young's departure.

Emery worked wonders at Villa Park in the second half of last season after replacing Steven Gerrard in the dugout and the former Arsenal boss is understood to be targeting a top four tilt in the coming campaign.
